You groaned rolling over and shutting off your alarm. “Today’s the day” you sighed

“Y/N! Mikasa, Eren, and Armin are here! HURRY IT UP!” You heard your mother shout.

“COMING MOM!” You yelled as you pulled on your boots while running down the stairs.

“Morning honey” Your mother said in a soft loving voice, but you could hear the worry.

“Mom. Don’t worry! I’m doing this to protect you ok? I'll be fine!” You reassured her.

“I can't help but worry. Fighting those unsightly monsters? It's dangerous my darling y/n” She said sitting down

“Mama, I'll be fine. Don’t worry! I have to go now” You hugged her and walked out the door.

“You ready y/n?” Mikasa asked you while you walked

“Nervous but yes, I’m ready. I've trained for this forever” You sighed and chuckled “What about you two?” You wrapped your arms around Eren and Armin.

“Nervous” Armin stated

“More ready than ever” Eren looked at the place they were tho group with the others who were joining the survey corps.

As the 4 of you walked to the entrance you stopped.

“Y/n? What’s wrong?” Mikasa asked.

“Will they even let you guys in? You’re all 13. What if they don't let you in?”

“Y/n, don't worry about that! They’ll let us in, I'm sure of it!” Eren said, grabbing your hand and pulling you through the gates.

You were greeted by a sea of kids looking to join the Corps. You of course are taller and older than everyone trying to join, so everyone turned their attention to you.

After waiting for hours everyone was grouped together and Commander Erwin, Captain Levi, Squad Leader Hange and 104th cadet training corps Head Instructor Keith Shadis were on stage. 

“Hello everyone. Before we begin, I'd like to introduce myself.” The man stated. “My name is Commander Erwin Smith. I am commander of the Scouts Regiment”

“I’m Captain Levi Ackerman of the Scouts Regiment”

“My name's Hange Zoe! Squad leader of the 4th squad!” She seemed happy, or excited.

“And I’m Head instructor Keith Shadis of the 104th training corps”

“Now then, down to business” Erwin said. “We need more people for the Scouts. Being in the scouts means death, watching people die, and possibly dying yourself. Those of you who wish to join a different regiment please leave”

You looked around, staying steady in your spot in the front row. You watched as people left. The 3 faces you could recognize were Mikasa, Armin and Eren. They stayed, although Armin was shaking. You chuckled.

Levi was staring intensely at you. “You there. Front row. What’s your name?” 

You looked up at him “Y/n sir” 

“Y/n, why are you chuckling? Is there something funny about death to you?” Levi scolded you

“No sir. I just find it distasteful how many people left. How many of them were cowardly and walked away. I’m happy my friends aren't like them, Captain” You stated confidently 

“What’s cowardly about not wanting to die?” Levi’s interest seemed to be piqued.

“Captain, with all due respect, I'm sure you didn't leave when you were told you might die. It's not cowardly to not want to die, it’s cowardly to walk away from your opportunity to protect those you love, to walk away from a city full of innocent people who are counting on the Scouts to keep them safe from the unsightly monsters outside of the wall. Even being afraid, my friend Armin came here, he stayed to join the Scouts despite hearing he might die or have to watch his friends die. That is the meaning of true bravery.”

“Well then, let me ask you this, Cadet. Are you afraid?”

“Of what Captain? Dying? Watching my friends and family die to the titans?” You looked down “Of course I am, I'll always be afraid of that, that's part of human nature, but I have people I want to protect, a city full of innocent people that are living as if those monsters don't exist. I intend to keep it that way, regardless of how afraid I am. I refuse to let that be a weakness and I will not turn my back on those who need protection.” You were looking up at the 4 of them.

“Oh wow! This ones a keeper for sure Erwin! She’s so brave!” Hange clapped and smiled.

“One last question Cadet” Levi got off the stage and walked so his face was inches away from yours.

“What is it, Captain?” You didn't move an inch

“Are you willing to die?” He asked, his eyes seemingly searching yours.

“Yes, I am. I’m willing to die to protect those who cant protect themselves.” You said with no hesitation.

“How old are you Cadet y/n?” Erwin asked stepping down beside Levi who had stepped back

“I’m 16 Commander” You said looking up at him

“16? So you're 3 years older than the other cadets?”

“Yes sir” you smiled

“Ohhh y/n you're so brave! To stand up to the Captain like that!” Hange laughed and threw her arm around you.

“O-oh no! I wasn't standing up to him! To be honest he scares me a little bit.” You chuckled lightly

“Alright. Levi, take the Cadets to the living quarters” Erwin began walking away. 

“ALRIGHT CADETS FOLLOW ME” Levi shouted

As you all got to the quarters you immediately found your bunk and laid down

“Soooo y/n was it?” A tall blond girl was standing by your bunk.

“Uhm yea? Who are you?” You sat up and made room for the girl

“Annie Leonhart” she said sitting down “I really liked how you stood up to the Captain, he was looking for weakness, I could tell”

“Weakness? Everyone has a weakness, it just depends on the person. Mine are my friends Mikasa, Eren, and Armin and my dear mother.”

“I see. I dont have anyone but myself. Anyways, I'll let you sleep. Night y/n” she said walking to her bunk

“Hey! Looks like we’re bunk mates!” A boy with a buzz cut said “I’m Connie! Nice to meet ya!”

“I’m y/n, nice to meet you too” you laid down and rolled over falling asleep almost instantly.
