beep, beep, beep
I heard my alarm clock beep a few thousand times before I pulled myself off my faux leather couch and started to return to reality.
I looked at my phone to see the time
7:58
Shoot. I have two minutes till work starts, and work is halfway across town.
I hopped around my apartment getting dressed, doing my hair, brushing my teeth, and getting my shoes on. I grabbed my purse and ran down to the lobby, not bothering to say Hi to my doorman, Tony.
I signaled a taxi, and got dropped off at my studio.
I got to the twelfth floor and my boss, Kev, was waiting for me with a serious expression on his face.
Do I care? No. I just want coffee.
“Your late maddy” Kev said, as I pushed past the bald, tattooed oaf and to the break room.
I grabbed my specialized mug that Aiden had sent as a birthday gift. He kinda sucks at gift giving but it's got a goldendoodle on it like Bowie, so it was nice. I started pouring coffee.
“I know i know” I said as Kev walked in
“Rough night” Haley, the intern, asked.
“Very” I replied “vodka and dance moms doesn't mix well”
“You were drinking on a work night?” Kev asked
“Calm down, dad, it's monday” I said. Kevin did not like that.
“Witt, you know your not supposed to drink, its company policy”
“Yeah well when my name is on the door, i don't think i have to listen to company policy” I said, sipping my coffee.
“Ooooo” Haley exclaimed before leaving the makeshift kitchen.
I pushed past Kev, coffee in hand and started walking up the glass stairs to my office. Kev followed closely behind me, pointing out everything I was doing.
I was just walking up the stairs. Somehow I was doing that wrong too.
I reached the crystal door to my very white office and pushed it open.
“Did you get your reports for the Doheny house done?” Kev asked and blindly, I shoved papers towards him.
“Yes and they’re organized by letter, so file them please” I said, sitting down, crossing my hands in front of me.
Kev stared blankly at me.
“Is that all?” I asked
“Did you-” Kev started
“Get the blueprints for the frederick house?” I asked and Kev nodded.
“Yes, yes I did, and someone needs to talk Miss Danvers out of those drapes” I said, handing him a stack of papers.
My phone rang and I looked at it.
“You should be going now” I smiled
“Yeah” Kev mumbled, smacking the blue paper against his hand.
“Don't let the door hit you on the way out” I mumbled once he turned and started walking.
I picked up the phone to be met by a cheerful “Hello!”
“Hello, Aiden,” I said. He was the only person I knew who would be that happy to be calling someone.
“How ya doing?!” Aiden asked.
“Good, you know, ,busy” I said.
“Good, busy’s good,” Aiden said.
“Yeah, how can I help you?” I asked.
“So you know Jess?” He asked and I laughed slightly.
“Yes, I remember Jess,” I said.
“Oh yeah right, best friends since high school, so I bought a ring-”
And I lurched forward “you bought a what!?”
“Well one night I was out with Nathan, you remember him?”
“Sadly” I mumbled
“Oh yeah right. Well anyways I bought this engagement ring that I saw on her pinterest board, and I'm planning on proposing tomorrow and I think she would really like the surprise of you and Nathan there with us. You know high school buddies?”
I haven't seen Nathan since the Sunday brunch disaster. And no it wasn't a disaster because of me, it was a disaster because of Jess’s little sister and cameleon. That’s the last time we go to the rain forest cafe.
“Yeah, but- a days really short” I said
“I wasn't planning on proposing tomorrow or at all in the next month. But tomorrow is her birthday” Aiden said and I looked at the little calendar I had on my desk. He's right.
It's April 28th. Dang it's been so long since i've seen her that I forgot her birthday.
“Yeah I'll be there” I said and I heard Aiden do a little jump.
“Great thanks! I can buy you the tickets”
“I have a pass so it's okay,” I said. I didn't but I didn't want to sound like a snob and say that it's possible he couldn't afford the ticket that I usually get when traveling.
“Okay great! That's great I can't wait to see you” Aiden said
“The feelings mutual” I said
“So i should let you get back to work” Aiden said
“Uh yeah. It was nice talking to you” I said and aiden hung up
Wow. Jess is getting married. If she says yes. Of course she’ll say yes.
I haven't had a relationship long enough for him to even meet my dog let alone my parents. It feels like high school was yesterday. But now I'm almost twenty five, we all live in different states, and don't talk as often.
Jess to this day is the only real friend I actually have. Kev is nice, but we have more of a love hate relationship than a friendship.
I guess this will be a new experience. Jess is moving on in her life, and I'm still in the same office just with a different title. Maybe it's time to focus on relationships over work.
Just a maybe
